The term Kahuna Gadula Nazarayin (Aramaic: כהונא גדולא נצרין) literally means, "Nazarani High Priest", and is essentially the same rank given to the High Priest of the temple in Jerusalem during the last temple period. In English however, the Nazarani Church uses the title, "Nazarani Metropolitan".
The Nazarani Metropolitan stands at the head of the Nazarani people, as their representative both before the world and their advocate before the Throne of God (See: 2nd Corinthians 5:10). As such, he has charge over all of the priests and the clergy of his apostolic administration, and is in charge of the tending to the development of the Nazarani Rite which is the only complete version of the Aramaic ritual of Saints Addai and Mari.
His Excellency, Hadrian Mâr Élijah Bar Israël, was Nazarani Metropolitan from 21 December 2012 until his retirement on 14 March 2017. The office of Nazarani Metropolitan is presently vacant.
