Easter Computus

The question of how to figure the date of Easter (Aramaic: קימתא Pronounced: qyamta) is known in English by either the Latin Computus, or the Greek word Πασχάλιον paschalion. Either way the search for the correct date is imperative, since it is from this date that many other dates are calculated throughout the year. And so it is imperative to know the Computus in order to be able to conduct the ritual services of the church.

Since the Resurrection the feast of Qyamta has been celebrated on the first Sunday of the lunar month of Nisan, which is associated to the vernal equinox. Yeshue was crucified on the full moon, which is to say on the 14th day of the month of Nisan.

The church's full moon varies from the astronomical full moon in that it is said to occur exactly fourteen days after the New Moon in any lunar month. The “New Moon” is when the first sliver of moon appears. The actual astronomical ‘full moon’ may occur either before or after this date. This calculation is based on the Tablets of Alexandria.

In addition to this it used to be that the Emperor of Rome determined the date based on the sightings at Alexandria, Egypt, that is until Sixtus of Rome began doing it from Rome. It is because of this that the Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria is also called “Pope” or “pontifex”, which means "Great bridge builder", but refers to whoever is the ‘head of the calendar’ since it is he who is building a bridge to heaven through time.
